Okay hoggers I need to be rescued. Going to key west Florida next week. Didn't want to hump with my 5mk3 and array of lenses. (Want to travel lite)Just opened my box , haven't even read the manual. Took some shots with it and I feel lost. How much of a curve am I going to endure. I'm hoping to do it all with this baby. I've seen great photos with this camera. Any help or links to quick tutorials appreciated.
You guys never let me down, you are the best. Thank you in advance.

First of all, you're going to my favorite place! A photog's paradise.
I got my sx50 about 6 months ago. The learning curve is not so much. Unlike my Canon T3, you cannot shoot RAW in auto mode. You need to be in P, TV, AV or Manual. Take the time to set it up properly. Your will be so surprised at the quality of the shots. If you're a bit more specific about what you're baffled about, I'll try to do my best to help. Have a great time in Key West and have a margarita for me! :-D

I just bought one two days ago, must admit it's different from my eos30d!
Didn't get a chance to print out the manual yet, but went on youtube and found enough to get me going....
and now I can't stop!
All I can say is, this little camera is amazing!
You're going to love it!

You have an 5mk3, you wont have any problem with an sx50

If all else fails try shooting in Auto. It works. Have fun and post some of those sx50 miracles.

I primarily shoot in Program mode, or HiSpeed Burst.
Program mode makes it very easy to adjust your exposure, plus you can shoot RAW, RAW+JPG or JPG only. I would strongly suggest setting the JPG to FINE instead of standard.

Any questions, just ask, there are quite a few happy and accomplished users on here!

I found these SX40 video tutorials helpful when I was learning about my SX50. Most features are the same.

Try the below settings. Stay out of digital zoom (though there are some decent shots to be had, for sure).

When zooming to great lengths, hold the camera very steady and push the shutter button slowly.

The more light, the better!

Use fastest SD card out there. Know that when shooting raw, write time to card is very noticeable.

With the camera being somewhat small, you will find a bit of initial frustration in hitting buttons you didn't intend :)

My SX 50 settings:
short-cut button - jpg/raw choices

high speed burst mode for bird action (no raw, but can use exposure compensation). To access: SCN on top knob, then FNC button on back 'til you see HQ. Once the HQ is set, next time you move knob on top from one of the other modes, you will already be in HQ.

AF - flexi zone
digital zoom OFF
AF-Point zoom ON
servo AF OFF
continuous AF ON
ISO auto settings 1600
High ISO NR - standard
Spot AE point - center
safety shift OFF
IS settings - continuous
display area - small

In the FNC menu:
continuous shooting mode
exposure: center weighted average

Just got a new Canon SX50 as a back up to my Sony NEX.
Now I have a new learning curve which is enough different to the Sony that it is hard to keep both sets of controls in my head at the same time.....I am old you know!
I bought a so called "Cheat Sheet" for the SX50, but all the items are small and hard to read....now I am very old!
I do see that they both have a an auto setting though so all is not lost!

We all learn differently, which is built upon our own prior knowledge. If one has a large repertoire to draw on, the learning curve, well, should be easy.

Less than a week to adapt to new gear so you can rapidly use it effectively for the most part, unlikely, that is
if you don't have a strong underlying basis to start.

So for the most part looks like auto setting. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't try M, Tv, or Av modes.

Just got back from Marathon and took two cameras, a Nikon AW100 underwater one and the SX50. Look out for morning moisture developing on the camera till it warms up.

Have a happy trip.

I agree. There are some awesome tutorials on YouTube. I've had sx50 for a couple months. It just feels right in my hand.

You made me smile. I just picked up the SX50, having gotten my NEX just 3 months ago. Really thought I was headed to crazy street. I'm excited about the zoom capabilities of the SX50 and look forward to "playing" with both. Will have to figure out how to unload the Sony 55-210mm lens. Good luck with the Canon and let's hear it for using "auto" once in awhile.
