Bug ID Please

I apologize if this is not a true macro (not sure). I posted this in the Close Up section but did not get a definitive answer and sent a private message to someone else but have not received an answer yet. It does look like a member of the wasp family. Can anyone ID it for sure? Thanks.

Sorry, can't help in the ID. I'd submit to Bug Guide. It helps to know where/when the photo was taken & reasonable size estimate. Sensor size and degree of magnification will help is sizing the critter.

Forgot to post size in this thread. I did in Close Up. Taken last week and it's about an inch long. I will use your advice and go the Bug Guide. Thanks.

Big eyes and big jaws. Whatever it is, it means business.

Good shot.

Great shot. Looks like a bug I wouldn't want to meet.

In nearly 70 yrs of buggin' it, I,ve never come across anything like this. I'd guess it is related (distantly?)to the sand wasps - big clypeus (the patch in front of the jaws), but clubbed antennae? Just don't know. I hope it's OK that I saved your fine photo in my own Whatsit file. I'll look around and repost if I can find it, if no one has beaten me to it. Luck.
Looks like a predatory wasp in any case.

Thank you. If you ever do find out what it is, please let me know. I still don't have an answer! I don't mind that you posted it. Marsha

Will do. Did you send it to Bug Guide?

Yes, I did and have not heard back yet. It's been about a week since I submitted it. If you noticed, the bug is eating a leaf.

I haven't had any success yet. I don't see any reason to think it's eating a leaf. No damage, no evidence on jaws. Still think it is a predator. The piercing-grasping jaws suit animal prey better. May stock prey in a hole for larvae. Still, just a guess.
