When is focus stacking not focus stacking?

Here is your laugh of the day for my stacking buddies.
Set up to shoot a very large beetle nose to tail with cognisys rail.
Started before the face, ended after the rear 180 frames later.
Verified program, movement, exposure, etc.. and went off to see what was new in Hog Heaven.
When collection was done i stacked my frames and was pleased with the results until i noticed only the first couple hundred ym of the subject was in focus.
All the frames were identical with the exception of magnification so i knew it had stepped.
What happened?

I had left the lens auto focus on, and the cable i made up for the D7100 to replace the IR shutter release made the lens focus just before the shutter tripped.
Every time the rail moved the camera, the lens refocused on the face.

Thank God the MP-E 65 must be manually focused!! That is the only reason I'm protected from making this mistake.
I bet you felt an incredible relief when you figured-out what happened.
