I just noticed that my Nikon D600 file name went from DSC_9999 to DSC_01. Is that normal or is there a setting I should set to keep the counter going above 9999?

The counter will not go over 9999. I suggest changing the file naming system from the standard DSC to something else via the menu system to avoid duplicate file numbering problems.

It's normal, Canons do the same thing. Congrats, you just shot your 10,000th picture.
