Hi Rob, hope you find me here. I got this lens to cut down on the amount of weight I haul around. We went to Oregon this last spring and I didn't want to take a lot of gear on the plane. What question do you have?
It is one of the best lenses I have that does everything and does it well. I have other lenses that are better for what they do. But to take a lens or lenses that do what the 28-300 does I would have to carry 3-4 lenses. In my kit I now take the 17-55 and the 28-300 and maybe the 10.5 to play with.

Thanks, Erv. I was just wondering if the 28-300 lens would be a good all around lens for me. I really liked my 28-200 but I was use to that. Just not used to changing lenes.

I love this lens and it is always on the camera. So far it has done everything I have wanted it to do. Where it has it's draw backs for me is inside the house. It is just not wide enough to take pictures in a small room. I have 30 or so old Nikon lenses from my film days and around 28 I have been collecting when I got my F5 and F6 and now the D300s. It makes for a nice walk not to carry so much gear.

The 28-300 does everything and is very sharp for this type of lens. You saw some of my pictures. If you would like to see a few more just let me know. It focus pretty close and does not lose any quality.

I suport my local camera store here in Medina. It is Dodds. They alway treat me pretty good. They just moved down to Medina a few years ago. But I use to go up to Cleveland. They have had a store there for a long time. You can find them at a better price some where else, but you can't get good service from the net. I can walk in and ask to see a lens and go home with it. If I like it I go back and pay for it. I keep them for about a week to see if I like it. Can't get that to many places now days.

The first few weeks with this lens was pretty weird. I was about ready to take it back. I could not get a sharp picture or good contrast to save me. I put it on the tripod and it turned sharp, go figure, ha. It took me a few days to figure out how to hold it and set up the camera to make it a great lens. But some of my other lenses have had to train me too. So if you get one, give it some play time.

Is "Delaware Camera Mart" still in Buffalo/Tonawanda--they were always good price wise and knowledge wise.. plus they had lots of lenses in stock to try on your camera to see if you liked it.
I miss them since I moved to NW Ohio

I lived in Sanborn,NY until 2002--My hubby worked for SGL Carbon in Niagara Falls until they closed in 2002... then he was offered a position here in Ohio..had to move for food!
We still go back to Niagara a couple of times/year to see family.
The guys at Delaware camera mart are the ones that got me hooked on the Canon EOS line way back when it was film :)
I have the newest edition Tamron 28-300 for my 60D

Let me ask you. How sharp is your Tamron 28-300? Does it give strong contrast? I assume it is auto-focus what is the maximum aperture to low light focusing?

mine is f3.5-6.3.. not a great low light lens.
I bought it for daytime sports distance..
It takes a good picture reasonably sharp slightly soft after 250mm (without sharpening) even at 250+ I can still crop or enlarge by 30% and have good quality... NOT good enough for portrait quality though.
For me this lens is a "it is what it is" type of thing.
I have a Canon 24-105 f4 "L" with superb quality but not the reach... I don't wan to pay $2000 for a 2 month/year baseball lens.
