Thinking about getting this lens - Nikon AF VR Zoom-NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED Lens.
Just how good is it? Any Nikon users out there want to weigh in and tell me if it's a worthwhile addition?

I hesitated to spend the money, but after buying a brand X 500mm and being very disappointed I took the plunge and am extremely pleased with it . If you would like to see some results just click on my flickr link below

Its actually a very good lens, quite sharp. The worst feature is that the mechanical drive AF system is painfully slow and searches in low light, both issues fixed extremely well with the new AF-S version of the lens (which is not just an upgrade, its a whole new design).

If you get the newer version, it has the silent wave motor and is much faster.. also more expensive.. I too love the lens though. (Nikon let me use the older one when I was working there).. The New version is supposed to be great and is on my Christmas list...
I have the new version & find it is amazing, it is sharp, versatile but is heavy & expensive but I have never regretted buying it. I can carry it & use it hand holding for long periods & I am an older lady but have been very happy with my photos of wildlife & birds. Still not terribly good at BIF but I think that is more of a learning curve for me!
I used the AF 80-400 for years and the only thing I did to get excellent sharpness at every setting was to make sure I used f/11 at the 400mm setting. If you can live with that, you will like that lens. Also, I never had trouble with the tripod mount as some reviews claimed.
However, I upgraded and now I don't have to stop down as much to get sharp photos at 400mm. But my wallet still hasn't gotten over it ...
Thanks for the responses.
There is no way I can afford the new version at this time, and for the few times I'll really need anything beyond 200 mm or so, the older one will work fine, I think. If I were into wildlife photography as a steady diet, then I might consider the new version.
I've ordered it b from BH. Thanks all for helping me make my decision. I knew I could count on UHH for guidance. :)

Pictures are amazing. I'm also looking at that lens.
New model 80-400 AF-S or older model?
What aperture were you most using on these shots to get that bokeh?

This is a new lens latest version, most were f/8 or close to that
