I saw a guy who had a quick release plate on the bottom of his camera and one on the side of his camera so that he could remove his camera from the tripod and from vertical to horizontal without using a ball head. It looked like both plates were attached using some kind of angle. Does anyone know where to get one of these?

Really Right Stuff and Kirk make them - they are camera model specific There are probably others as well. No cheap, but well worth it.

Sounds like an L Bracket. Needs to be purchased for specific camera. Most are compatible with the Arca Swiss mount so you may need to also purchase this type of mount for your tripod. Look for brands like Kirk or Really Right Stuff. Other cheaper brands may be flimsy.

Kirk L brackets can be bought at major online photography stores like B&H but Really Right Stuff needs to be ordered directly by the manufacturer.

I have 2 L brackets from RRS AND find them indispensable but as others mentioned Arca Swiss needs to be used.

Thanks everyone. I would love to have that instead of flipping my camera around. Just looks more stable to me.

I'll check these out! Thanks

I have one from RRS but find I don't need to use it with my Acratech ball head.

Desmond brand make a universal 'L' bracket. the cost is not to bad, however you may not be able to access the side panel on some cameras, this will make shooting tethered impossible.Desmond L Plate DAL-1 Quick Release Arca Swiss Compatible for Camera / Tripod Head.

Keep in mind that you will also need the Arca Swiss style clamp, that's the part that goes on the tripod

 I use the Kirk L Brackets. Excellent product.

The L bracket allows you to maintain your composition vs having to completely recompose when you 'flop' a ball head over on its side.

The Kirk L brackets are camera specific and allow you access to the ports on the camera.

Some cameras have tripod mounts in the buttom, as well as on the side of the body, if not you use an L-plate, so you can switch from horizontal to vertical. They are made by all kinds of companies. The ones I use on my cameras are made by Pro Media Gear and they are as good as they get, but others from Kirk or RRS are similar. On my film camera I don't need to use an L-plate, as it has a tripod mount on the side of the body, so I just screwed a quick-release-plate to it and I was done.

Could your film camera be a Pentax 645? or perhaps a Busch 2 1/4 x 3/1/4? Never heard of a 35 with two sockets. Sure are handy, aren't they?

Yes, my film camera is the Pentax 645nII, but I had a 35mm Rollei many years back and it had the same thing, it also had a film back, so you could just snap a pre-loaded magazine to the back. You could switch from negative to slide, or back, in an instant
