problems with canon 50mm f1.8 lens.
Purchased the 50mm f1.8 plastic special to play with wide apertures. Worked fine at first then started to give clean contact error and freeze up. After operating shutter a few times it would be ok. Now it gets worse with both clean contacts message and it will stuck and not operate. It is under warranty so it will go back for repair. Hopefully it will misbehave on arrival to canon. Anyone had a similar problem with this lens?

Nope, I have one and find it almost funny how it crunches and grinds when focusing. It does it in a pleasant way. I seldom use it but every time I do I am amazed at the sharpness. It is by far the most cost effective, albeit least used, lens in my inventory.
Pls let us know how Canon handles the in warranty repair.
don't have any problems with mine, but it is a Mk I made in late 80's with the metal mount. Got it on ebay for $149 with shipping. And in mint condition, even still had the inspectors stickers on it.
Yours may just be 'bad'... A comment on usage: use only single shot focus. The AF motor in the plastic fantastic cannot support AI Servo (continuous) focus.

Never tried it with a need for AI focus. It will probably get you some attention from bystanders stepping out of your way when the grinding and crunching starts. In a pleasant kind of way.

Nice to know --- think I'll save my money now by not buying one.
Bought one used many years ago. Never had the issue you mention. Suggest contacting Canon, send it in and avoid the frustration.
I'd send it back to Canon. They probably will not even try to repair your copy, but just send you a new one. That lens is so cheap, and such low cost to produce it will be more cost effective to replace it. You don't mention any other lenses your have, but if you have others, do they behave the same way and give you errors too? If the 50mm is your only lens, find a friend, or visit a camera store with your camera and test one of their stock lenses to eliminate the camera.

Never had this problem. I have a Canon T1i camera and this lens works perfect for me! I didn't buy it from Canon and paid about $125 or less - the model is EF 50mm f/1.8 II. I love this lens.
Nikon guy here but when I've got the EE message and a lens won't work I have cleaned the contacts and they have worked great. With a clean contact message have you done it? If not try it before you send it back. - Dave
