DNG vs PSD vs TIFF

An interesting thread earlier today focused on the benefits of TIFF vs PSD.

So let me toss in another format--DNG. I shoot in RAW and save in DNG. If I'm saving the images I've edited, which is the "best" format in which to save the final--TIFF, PSD or DNG. Is the answer any different if I save works in progress, knowing that I will likely come back to the image and do more editing?

Thanks.

Hello
TIFF, DNG are a lossless process so yes you can come back and make edits!

Note that there are two "flavors" of dng: the raw version and linear dng, which is like the tiff file.

I think the choice between them comes down to what the software tools you want to use can handle.

Don, I'll relate that all of my images get stored as DNG, and if I need to share, I export to JPG.

If I take an image over to Photoshop or Perfect Photo Suite for editing, when I bring them back to Lightroom, I bring them back as PSD, primarily to preserve the layers. Yes, I end up with the same image in the catalog twice - - one as a DNG, the other (edited) as a PSD.

Pretty much the same thing I do. But I'm always looking for the next better ides. :)

NEF is a Nikon RAW file. DNG is and Adobe RAW file.

NEF is also proprietary, as is CR2 and others. DNG is an open format, with the specifications available to everyone.

The key word might be "available". I don't know how many programs can process DNG files to images. Also, the files stored by Lightroom do not have the changes implemented on them: you can only see them with Lightroom. If you export as a tif when done it will have all your changes and anyone can view it with any image editor. Same for jpeg.

I don't routinely do that but am considering what to do about it as none of my descendants are likely to ever use Lightroom, but they might enjoy looking at my photos when I'm gone. I'd hate for them to see only my RAW captures without my editing...including at least the basic edits I apply automatically when importing to Lightroom.

(PS: I do convert to DNG on import because it is a little more likely to be viewable than .nef)
