A recommendation for a ball head, please.
I have a Manfrotto 322RC2 ball head. Since purchased about 4 years ago, I have been disappointed. If the ball head is unused for a few minutes or longer, it seems to lock in position and is most difficult to move. Does anyone else have this ball head and do you have a similar problems? If so, have you solve or have you replaced. I have email Manfrotto and get to response.
Does anyone use a ball heat that they are completely or very happy with. I would like your recommendation. Panorama shots are not that important when considering a ball head.

A bit of light oil on the ball may loosen it.
Many professionals like heads from Really Right Stuff
http://www.reallyrightstuff.com/ and
Acratech
http://www.acratech.net/ Some of these can be found on Amazon and eBay. It's okay to go used. These are mechanical parts and repair is easy.
These ball heads are expensive. They are precision milled of the highest grade of materials. These ball heads will last a lifetime. Get the ones with quick release. They lock tight. You can set the drag for movement. If you get cheap, they won't last, will be a pain to use and may even loosen and drop the camera and lens. I would not go Manfrotto as they have a proprietary plate. Stay with Swiss Arca type - universal
I bought an Acratech & I'm pretty happy with it. If nothing else it's beautiful to look at.

I have the same one and it is fine. You may need to run some greese or oil on the ball and free it up a bit!
I have a Vanguard that I use on a Vanguard tripod. Works well for me.
I'm shopping for tripod & head and am on a restricted budget. Are there any lower cost options that will support a D5100 w/a Sigma 70-300 on it? (I want to set this up inside by a window that faces the bird feeders & use a remote release)
I wouldn't recommend any type of wet lubricant, most ball heads use some type of poly-plastic or teflon as a pressure shim, wet lubes and even grease will react with plastics and gum up. Use a dry lubricant like graphite powder.

Agree - I saw it and had to have it. It is light compared to others (under 1 pound) yet offers good support.
Are you keeping your eye on craigslist? good deals can be had.

[quote=RWR]This head supports my Mamiya RB67 with 140mm macro lens and extension tubes, it should support your rig.
Thanks for the lead.... plus, it's hard to go wrong with BH.....
I have a Manfrotto 322RC2 ball head. I have been disappointed since purchased about 4 years ago. If the ball head is unused for a few minutes or longer, it seems to lock in position and is most difficult to move. Adjustment of tension does not make a difference.
