Monday was the only day I used just the softbox, without the macro lights, which I am beginning to believe Nikon raped me for. I don't think any are real keepers but I do like the lighting a lot better.
I normally only get an hour a day to shoot, except for Sundays, and many of my shots looked rushed to me.
Matthew
Rushed or not they are still interesting photos. I agree that an hour is nothing in planet Macro time and on top of that there is computer time but it is still good to have it daily.
What speedlight with softbox? Illumination looks fine.
Suggestion: Decrease ISO to 200 (-1 stop) & increase shutter duration to 1/250-sec (+1 stop). Even ISO 100, and increase speedlight output.

I was using a SB-800 with a 8" round softbox. I will try your suggestions today, I am using chop sticks as a form of rigid support. Should my goal be ISO 100 or should I try for ISO 50? Is the bigger the softbox the better illumination,I do have a 10" round and a couple square models, I was planning on trying each and using trial and error to decide.
Thanks for all the assistance.
Matthew
Your SB-800 is an excellent speedlight. I wish that I owned one.
The larger the diffuser face, the better the diffusion, however, large diffusers are more difficult to use while in the field.
My rectangular FotoDiox has in internal cloth diffuser that has to be stretched from one side to the other. I have never looked inside a circular softbox.
Make sure the SB-800 built-in 'drop-down' plastic diffuser is used, set operation to Manual, select widest angle of coverage, and start at 1/8 power.
ISO 100 should work well, as this will allow some background to be visible in available light. I use ISO 200 with my SB-600.
Nothing worse than a limp soft box. On the bright side the purple flower looks pretty good to me...
Matthew, I just looked at your new post with the beautiful beetle and left a comment about how many photos you have to take sometimes to get a few good ones. You are doing just fine and I guess you know about the True Macro- Photography forum. Keep up the good work.
