For macro photography of insects and wildflowers, can I use my old Nikon SB-26 flash with my Nikon D7100 and Polaroid Macro LED Ring Light Universal?
Or should I consider purchasing a different flash unit? My thanks in advance for your input and suggestions. Strix.
I have no personal experience with a Polaroid Macro LED Ring Light Universal, but have a poor opinion about any LED system for macro-photography.
According to this review, the Nikon SB-26 has a GN of 36, which is respectable:

My opinion on LEDs is similar to Douglass' -- just not impressed. The SB-26 should work. A useful feature of speedlights (for macro) is the ability to go Manual.
SB-26 works good with a softbox diffuser. I shot one, gulp, with a Canon..... What's nice is the unit fires as an optical slave so you don't have to cable it up. Popup flash will trigger it. Only gotcha in this configuration is the recharge time of the popup. No experience with LED ring lights. Experience with LED's on stacking rigs leads me to believe it would not be adequate for field illumination but if it is constant illumination I wonder if it would serve as a good focusing lamp.
