Doves, Shhh, Nesting in Progress...

About 3-4 days ago we spotted a dove sitting on one of our hanging planter baskets.
Closer watching found it's mate around the back side of the basket.
I've been trying to take pictures as things progress.
I'm hoping to make a photo journal of this Family amidst the darting Hummers....
I shut down that dripper and will sacrifice the plant for her nest. I can hand water the ones below her.
Dove eggs are susceptible to anything penetrating the shell. (NOT waterproof).
OK, we will watch for pics.
Um! Do you have all the permits and code papers to rent an apartment on your property. That doesn't look like it could pass the building department's inspection. After all, this is California!

Umm, no.
But then, they are squatters.
Wife sez 14 days to hatch, and could take up to 24 hours when they do start.
I'm one who kind of steps back and just watches. I'm just passin through this life.
I'll try and keep this thread alive for those interested.
You must not have outside Cats, yes?

Thanks, I'll try.
That is encouraging news about a pair using a nest for years.
We have smaller birds that have 3 nesting places around the eves of the house, and they seem to get used year after year.
I'll try and maintain this "Dove basket" in the hopes they will return in the future. That's Columbine flowers in it.
We have two small dogs that tend to keep cats away.
Looking forward to seeing "the family". Nice work, Sonny.

the doves that nested here sometimes laid and hatched more than 1 clutch a season. the fledglings have huge clown feet, we called them hobbit feet

Hi Randy. Thanks!
It's a lot of work being a Daddy again at my age.
Not.

So things had been very quiet and no real interesting changes.
Just Mama dove sitting on her clutch, she wasn't even knitting booties yet.
While I was gone taking care of things at the Daughters house, the wife saw the Daddy dove come to take over the "chores".
Letting Mama dove go to feed and water, get a manicure, take a shower, and whatever doves do.
This morning Daddy (spots) was still diligently sitting keeping the eggs safe and warm. He's noticeably bigger than she, and we are able to tell when he is around.
It's a bit like watching paint dry right now, or cracks in the mud widen.....
I move around the nest occasionally snapping humming bird photos, mostly in early morning. I want the doves to be relaxed with my presence for pictures of the chicks later. But for the most part they are left to their own and observed from inside the house.
What a great G'Pa you are Sonny! I bet they even name one of the little ones after you :)

Yeah. The goofiest one.
The first one to fall out of the nest, that'd be my namesake.

Guess who stuck their head out for a look around?
We have at least on dove chick in the nest this morning.
The wife noticed it has a feathered head, so she thinks it's maybe older than we think. But it's a copy of it's parents, just tiny. Don't know, never saw dove chicks before.
I tried to get a picture, but it's camera shy right now. All I got was some ruffled feathers... :? Daddy was tending at the time.
More later.... hopefully.
