I am an artist specializing in equine and pet portraits. I want a camera that will give me exceptional detail, but that can also capture action shots. I am clueless at this point. Budget around $1200-$1500. Any sugestions?

Please disgregard. The camera I suggested did not fall into your price range.

turnpt,

Your price range will depend on where you purchase your camera, Walmart will have one price and BestBuy will have another for the same equipment.

Concentrate on the camera body and available lenses for that body. Any of the popular, mid level, DSLR cameras will perform very well for your needs. Pick a camera with a sensor capable of 12 - 18 Mp, this will capture images you can print up to 11 x 14inch easily.

Your next choice is the lens assemblies you select for your proposed subjects. For small to medium sized pets a 70 - 300mm Zoom will enable you to get close-ups without making the animal uncomfortable. An 18 - 70mm will work well for the larger animals like Horses and Elephants. Both lenses will allow you to get within a reasonable distance and remain safe for you and the subjects.

When using these lenses keep them in their mid range for best sharpness.

ditto, D7100. Best DX camera on the market!!! Couple with a 18-200 VR ll zoom and you are good for anything except birds in flight and grizzly bears in the wild.

I own a Canon t3i - an excellent camera for both stills and video. It sports an 18mp sensor so the detail is excellent.
And it's well within your budget at $600 or so.

I agree, Nikon D7100. One of the best cameras made for what you have in mind. The lens choice would be something else to decide upon. You would do well with the 24-85mm kit lens for the Nikon D610. I use mine all the time and it is very sharp. Of course other forum members will give you their recommendations as well.
