Chased this guy while trying to get some of the red ones.... Never did. Too skittish.

Dragonflies are quite long, and wide, wingtip to tip. This makes macro DOF quite difficult. Yours is a nice capture.

Here are two views of a Red Skimmer dragonfly.

Hand-held Nikon D5000 at ISO 400, with Nikkor 105-mm macro lens, 1/60-sec at f/22, full sun.

I tried to add the technical info as an edit but it was disallowed (waited too long?) My dragonfly was hand-held with a micro-Nikkor 105 f/2.8G 0EV 1600 asa f/13 @ 1/640. VR engaged.

Nice images: The sharp focus on the wings contrasted with the background makes the wing detail really stand out.

This is a close-up photo. Please re-submit with cropping as tight as possible to wings.

Not too shabby! But you trimmed-off the wing tips. So either crop not quite so tight to show wingtip-to-tip, or crop even tighter to emphasize dragonfly face & body.
