Mating Bee Flies

I see lots of Bee Flies, but this is a first to see them mating.... I have a couple of Dorsal shots too, but they aren't in perfect focus so I'm not attaching them.... The insects flew off (still united) after 2 attempts at a dorsal... Throwing in an image of an unknown species of fly as well

Great pictures. I am confused. If they both flew off still attached which one was flying backward? How did one know to fly backward and the other forward. I guess such is life in the insect world.

Only the dominant fly uses its wings in normal flight, and the other fly is in tow backwards, not using wings.
