I bought one of these ball heads for my Vanguard tripod. I love the action, stability and build of this unit. What I don't like is the fact that it does not have a quicker release from the tripod. I also have a pistol grip head that has a nice quick release to it, but it was not as stable as I wanted.

Is there a ball head that has both quick release and stability, or is there an adapter that I can get to get a better (quicker) release?

This is what I use, and I love it. It's rated for 6.6 lbs

It still screws str8 to the tri-pod or the mono-pod though

thx.. I wanted to get away from the pistol grip. Looking for an adapter so I don't have to buy another head.

You can get a QR clamp to put on the tripod, and put this head on a plate which matches it.

How would you do that? Right now the plate slides onto the head.

You get a clamp like the Wimberley C-12 Quick Release Clamp and a QR plate like the Wimberley P5 Universal Quick Release Plate. The clamp is mounted on the tripod, the head is mounted on the plate, and now you have a QR system for the head. There are cheaper options, using Wimberley or Really Right Stuff is the upper end of how expensive this would be.

Yes, exactly, one of the less expensive option.

It's pretty robust. I'd hate to get hit in the head with it.

The key is how well it stays screwed in. If it is machined cheaply, the QR screw could loosen. I'm not familiar with the brand and how good their quality control generally is.

You initially indicated you wanted to remove the head from the tripod quicker, this shows the plate which attaches the camera or lens to the head. Which are you looking for?

I think I created some confusion with my imprecise description of using a QR clamp and plate. I wasn't clear that the clamp would go on the tripod legs, the head would go on the QR plate, and then the QR system would allow the head to be attached quickly.

I knew what you were referring to...personally I wouldn't do as there is one more element that could cause a failure, but it's not my rig, so if the OP wants to do this, more power to him...it's his gear, not mine ;-)
