Republican Iowa U.S. Senate candidate Joni Ernst attempted Tuesday night to walk back statements made at a January event in which she said President Barack Obama had “become a dictator” who should be “removed from office” or face “impeachment.”

In a statement provided to Yahoo News, reacting to a story published earlier Tuesday, Ernst said that she did not believe Obama is a dictator but rather “his repeated use of unilateral action sure makes him look like one.”

“To be clear, I have not seen any evidence that the President should be impeached,” the statement read.

Ernst’s original comments came in response to a question at a Montgomery County GOP forum in which she was asked about a then-pending Supreme Court case. In the case discussed by the questioner, the Obama administration had been accused by the plaintiffs of executive overreach by filling positions on the National Labor Relations Board during a Congressional recess without the consent of Congress. The Supreme Court, in a June unanimous decision, deemed Obama’s actions unconstitutional, nullifying the appointments.

In her clarifying statement, Ernst characterized the question she received at the forum as a “hypothetical” — which at the time, it was, given that the Court had not yet rendered an opinion. Since then, however, the Supreme Court’s decision ruling Obama’s action unconstitutional made clear the justices believed he was out of line. Ernst’s statement Tuesday night implicitly argued that taking an action judged unconstitutional is not tantamount an “abuse of power” obligating senators to seek to unseat him, as she suggested in January it could be.

“I was asked a question involving a hypothetical about what I thought should happen if the Supreme Court ruled that the president had committed an ‘abuse of power.’ Obviously if the Supreme Court were to ever rule that the President of the United States had abused their power, that would be a very serious charge,” Ernst said in the statement. “I responded by saying that if the court in fact made such a ruling, that the president should face the necessary repercussions. I would give the same answer about any president, Republican or Democrat.”

“I hope Bruce Braley would feel similarly about any chief executive whom the Supreme Court ruled had abused power,” Ernst added of her Democratic opponent.

I'm a Democrat and proud to be one. I believe some of the Republicans, especially in the House of Representatives are desperate to remove Obama by employing impeachment, even when there are no impeachable acts that can be attributed towards our President. Some of these Republicans can't get their act together to pass any kind of descent legislation so they will blame the President for everything and will scream impeachment, impeachment.
At the same time I want to thank the many honorable Republicans who are trying their best to make this a better country with good intentions, but are beaten down by the extreme right tea party Republicans.

I agree with you, Regis. It seems Congress wants to both sue the president and impeach him without cause. I respect Joni Ernst for not following blindly behind the Republican leadership and Sarah Palin, who, I think, are both out for publicity stunts.

The level of response from the "right?" wing is often the school yard name calling and thinking phrases like "bull shit" are a form of communications. Example Dumb O' Crat... surprised the -Crat was not Crap... Next time you feel like name calling Cameraniac feel free to use Dumb o' Crap. Me, I am an Independent... except I find the Reactionary Righteous Wingers are beyond consideration. Perhaps I am a best called fiscal conservative humanist.

Too often Right Wingers open their mouth to see what comes out and have to later eat their words. "Republican Iowa U.S. Senate candidate Joni Ernst" now eats her words adding a dash of this flavor or that... to make the words palatable to her and to others... If she and sister Sara were angles they would spend time flying over the Coo Coo Nest.

The Texas Breed of Republicans are Separatist ... it is unthinkable to them that a mixed race man is in the White-house except as a visitor. I fully expected the Governor Perry to extend his left hand when greeting Obama at the airport.

It is sad to see so much hatred coming from the tea party or extremest right republicans. They seem to be blinded by their ignorant and racist remarks, so much so, that they can't or won't pass any worthwhile legislation to help the average American person.

What a short and conceited memory you have. "Hate" ROFL- Your side invented and patented it, and brandish calling someone else as having it as a weapon. Calling Palin a C__T was an act of love no doubt.

Be happy, we are all sleeping in the divided bed you have made, where you have actively pitted races and classes and parties against each other. And then blame it on someone else. Takes no talent to split something apart, but it does take talent to bring people of all walks together.

Look and I'll refresh your memory you hating bigot..
