The first photo is with natural light coming through the windows off to the left, the second is the first shot taken with my new ring light.

Notice how your natural side-light photo looks 3-D, but the ringlight looks flat. This is a typical characteristic of a true ringlight. Try taping about 1/3 of your ringlight, so you have uneven light. See if this restores some depth to your image, by introducing a bit of shadow.

Thank you for the advice. This light has the ability to turn off half of the light either right or left and I guess I could rotate it to get the best effect.

Half loss may be too much. Using an opaque card, try shielding 1/4 to 1/3 of entire ring. I am interested in seeing your results.
