Has anybody used the Portrait Professional Software? I downloaded the trial version yesterday. It seems like a good program for portraits.

I have ... pretty easy to use ... just one word of caution, let it "fix" one thing at a time, and dont make too many rapid edits, or it will crash on you. I'm running Windows Vista with 4gb ram and a terabyte of hard drive space. Pretty average for speed and working room, and it still crashes on me if I go too fast. Here's a before and after pic of my sister. See the dramatic results in the after, but still shows good detail. (see the fine peach fuzz on her cheek?)

Thank you AVarley. I've been playing around with it, and so far I really like it.

It is good. I like it. But it usually is best to dial BACK the default output -it can be a bit too much. But every image is unique, so use good judgement.

I don't know much about the program but I know Windows and the amount of Ram on your computer is most likely the impetus behind the crashing. You should have at least 6 gb of ram in Vista to run a graphics program without incident regardless of what the software maker is telling you. The reason is that there are many operations running in the background using parts of the memory.

Sad isn't it? I actually recently purchased 4 ram modules, 2 screaming gigs each, to update my old Dell .. but get this, my rig only has two slots for ram, so I'm maxed out with 4. I really should update, but the thought of reinstalling and re-tweeking all of the software I use on this one into a new PC is less than appealing and is what keeps me using this old Dell Dinosaur, I mean Dell Dimension :? So I just go slow and hope not to crash the software.

Sorry, went off subject there a bit. Portrait Professional is really easy to use and does a great job I think!

I have tried it, and I think I am faster and better than Portrait Professional just using the zillion tricks I know in Photoshop. Portrait Professional bludgeons the image to levels of unreality too quickly. By the time you tweak the settings in Portrait Professional, you could have done a more sophisticated job in Photoshop which is overall superior on the perfecting of perfection scale.

Ok, curious.. If you saw the after pic posted above by itself, would you comment it looks unreal? Generally you'd only ever see the result of a retouched portrait, so hard to judge. Again, just my humble opinion.

The picture shown is not too overdone, but based on the original as depicted, it is dishonest. There are ways to dramatically improve an image without reaching the level of dishonesty.

What portrait professional does is a variation of what we olde time Photoshop users call "digital skin replacement," which is an easy thing to do with more control than Portrait Professional. There are dozens of things we can do that Portrait Professional cannot as well.

Just be careful ... it's so easy to overdo the effects ... remember less is more... that way your subjects don't come out looking like barbie dolls.

I use Portrait Professional software and have for several years, it is an amazing piece of software, you can make corrections on faces as detailed as you wish. I also use Imagenomic Portraiture as a plug in with Photoshop PS5. Portrait Professional is a more detailed and intensive portrait program than is Portraiture plug in. Portrait Professional allows you to literally shape the face by making the face more slender or full. If you do portrait work I think that Portrait Professional is a great piece of software to have at your disposal for intense editing and post processing. If you wish software that is not as intense give Imagnomic Portraiture a try also. Portrait Professional of course is a stand alone piece of software, and Portraiture of course is a plug in and you can edit withing Photoshop without having to move the image or images you with to edit into Portrait Professional

I use Portrait Professional also and love it because it is quick and easy. A ton easier to learn than Photoshop and a ton less expensive! I don't see there is any difference in honesty no matter what software program you're using. You are simply enhancing the look. You are still altering the image somewhat when you improve it. The level of how you do that depends on the project and what you're trying to achieve. If the "dishonesty" statement were valid, then anyone putting on makeup to hide their blemishes is being dishonest also. I don't buy into that. I use PP on my macs (64 bit versions) and haven't seen the crashes. There are times when nothing else but Photoshop will do, but for examples like AVarley used, Portrait Professional is a great product.

I love PP. Heed the warnings though about over doing it. It is very easy to reshape someones whole face if you are not careful. I wish it worked a bit faster, but other than that, I have no complaints :)
