We live near where osprey nest, But i had not been able to get a shot of one until our trip home on the Cape May - Lewes Ferry on June 23. We were just settling in and were still at the dock when the captain announced that there was an osprey nest with MOM & CHICKS off the port side of the ferry. (I am really glad he did not say "left side" as many passengers went to the right!). Of course I grabbed my camera (NOT my D5200 and not my new Canon SX50, but my Sony P&S) and ran like hell to get shots - my first ever! - of an osprey on her nest.
The shots are not that great. It got really crowded along the railing at the "pointy end" of the boat, and I lost quite a bit of time shoving old ladies and little children overboard. I did manage the five shots I have included here. There were actually 6, but one included a body going overboar4d. No idea how that happened! Please note the interesting choice of building material Momma osprey used.
Oh, it turns out I used the best camera for the shots because - all toghether now! - it was the camera I had with me!
Good for you! They use all kinds of interesting junk in their nests. Really enjoyed your story, too!
Congrats. The hatchlings insure that the parents will be nearby for the next couple of weeks. Maybe you can go back with a better camera and grab some even better shots now, and don't for get to post some when you do

I am seriously considering doing that. Normally we take the car over, but this last time we went as foot passengers. So of course all I wanted to lug was my little Sony. At least I had that!

Thanks!
Just for the record - I didn't shove any old ladies or little kids overboard. But boy oh boy, I seriously considered it when they stopped dead in front of me and blocked my way to the left side near the pointy end of the boat.
We have all been there, but you gave me a great laugh!

That was my intent. Glad I succeeded.
Glad you had your camera handy, Mike! What a thrill! Good shots!
