Learn't something today re: raw vs Jpeg.

Today my flash came a little loose and didn't fire for a few shots before I noticed. When I downloaded to the computer the Jpegs were totally dark but the raw ones were fully lit. I was surprised that there was such a difference. At first I thought why use the flash and then I realised that the flash does more than just give adequate light and the photos with flash were better.

As an aside, I noticed that when downloaded to Picasa the information on all shots said 'No flash used'. Is this because the internal flash doesn't fire with the speedlight?

Via computer Post Processing, an under-exposed raw file will still produce an acceptable JPG, but with noticeable digital noise.
On the other hand, an under-exposed camera-generated JPG may be too dark to correct in PP to a useable image.

Third-party speedlights (like Yongnuo) may not register in Canon or Nikon Exif info.

Thank you for your quick reply Douglass. By the way, my original jumper is still hunting on the cover of the compost heap. I am so pleased because I thought I had frightened him off.
