Based on my experience at another forum, a political discussion section might not be the best idea.

Discussions got heated to the point of name-calling, and many people left the forum as a result.

I can only picture how upset some would get, discussions get heated enough here just talking about post processing vs. no PP at all.

And Canon vs Nikon vs everything else.

I didn't think there was anything else.

I constantly receive requests for new forum sections. In order to keep the core forum simple while allowing for more sections I've implemented user-managed sections.

You can read the description here:

http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-1-1.html#305265

If you have an idea for a section that you would like to manage, please send me a PM and I'll see about setting it up.

If the new sections are not advertised on the site anywhere, it would seem that this will leave all the newbies in a "generic" area where nobody with expertise will be left to answer their questions - and everybody with expertise will be nestled in their unadvertised hiding places to avoid the general masses, newbies, and simple questions. So UHH turns into lots of hidden chat rooms and is no longer a general forum for the public at large.

Plus, I've only seen five or six people on this site who act unbiased enough, patient enough, and professional enough to operate a section without turning it into a megalomaniac's haven for opinions that nobody would be allowed to disagree with, expand upon, or add to. I predict that section operators would eliminate subjects, posts, and posters randomly to make the section fit their personal preferences and vision - despite breaking UHH rules then follow their actions with, "Sorry, won't do it again" - and that drives everybody away.

I'm opposed to this. Break the forum further into subject related sections so newbies can know where to ask their questions but don't make them user-managed.

If you break this down into a lot of subcategory segments new people coming into this forum will either become lost, unsure where to post, or that may not be responded to because we were all somewhere else. Some like to move about in different segments and others don't. We don't want to have new areas that become dead twigs on a tree and have to prune them off later. That is my opinon on the subject. I agree...too many different forums would ultimately dilute the main discussion forum...I think the variety of subjects listed under the main forum is part of its appeal...I know I like to peruse it and look at the posts that I call the "what is that?"

I learn alot that way...

Just let threads run where they will. Off the origional subject? Of course, eventually. But everybody will find their "spot" at some point. Everyone on this site has a "creative" aspect to their lives. This is the first site I've found that just flows. If a thread wanders off topic, just start a new thread and re-direct. We don't need topic czars. Just my $.02

I believe this real issue is with only having one forum for "sharing" threads are getting pushed to the 2nd, 3rd or even the 4th page by the middle of the day. There are tons of members who have posted asking why no one comments on their pictures, this will help have them seen.

As for being worried about who is monitoring the forums, I can't help you there. I volunteered to host/monitor the people section. Does that mean i'll delete all posts that I don't like the PP used? Of course not! Does it mean that if a poster I don't see eye to eye with posts that I'm going to delete their thread? Nope, last time I checked I wasn't in middle school or high school. We are all adults here.

The thing I like most about this site is the cordiality of it's members and their willingness to help without resorting to harsh critiques. I can only remember courteous and helpful remarks being posted.

I wish I had selective memory so I could say the same. Most of us attempt to be helpful & courteous, but in the past, we have had a few detractors.

I disagree. Politics should be discussed, just not here.
Religion on the other hand is best handled on your own or with others that share your belief. Actually a discussion on religion betwee different faiths is good as long as you don't kill the person who disagrees with you. But that's also not a subject for this forum. Ok I'm done with politics and religion. But not college football which also should not be discussed on this forum. That being said- Roll Tide! Got 14? We do!

How about a section on Humor?

OK, a photographer walks into a bar, which is pretty stupid since he should have seen it in the first place. [GROAANNNN]

Based on an interesting interaction with another UHH'er, Bruce_H, perhaps there should be a section where members are willing to trade pix with each other, with the strict rule that neither can sell it. Whaddya think?
Bruce_H & I are trading a few pix, but based on his skills, he's getting the short end of the stick. :)

I like Nikonians72's list to. I think we should add a 'which is better Nikon or Canon,' section. That would fire things up a little. :)

Great idea. No politics! Now which would be the donkey and which would be the elephant.

A suggestion about the new User-Managed sections. Actually, it's a matter of format.

Keep the sections that you see when you get your Forum Digest email, but just add links, no sub categories or topics, to the bottom. That way, anyone who see's a category that tickles their fancy will see what's available and then click that link and see a list of what's cookin' for that day.
It'll be good for the newbies who aren't aware of many of the other sections.
Only a suggestion.

You can just use the donkey for both parties. Just take the photo from behind with the tail raised high. I don't think I need to expand on that. That wasn't suppose to come out that way. But it's pretty funny I don't care who you are! I think I need therapy. Another camera problem. Loose nut behind the lens.
