I have carried a Bogen 3221 around for years with the same complaint. The carry straps/bags did not quite cut it for me. I got a Lowepro Vertex 200 AW and it holds my Bogen 3221 in a pocket that attaches to the back. The pocket comes off if I do not want to carry the tripod and the multiple straps keep it secure. It works really well with this big tripod.

Buy a monopod and a pistol-grip head:

Sirui P-324S Carbon Fiber Photo/Video Monopod

They are both beautifully made and function perfectly. They're also a fine walking stick if you unscrew the head.
