I drove into a small town 45 miles north of Bakersfield Calif. I told my wife I was going to photograph this town after we get some rest and make a plan. She told me you may step out of this truck with a camera , and somebody may step out of a building and pop a cap into you . I guess thats just the way times are now days .

Ok that is a little scary. I am glad I am still in Oklahoma and most people don't have a problem with someone taking pictures. But your story definitely makes me want to be a little more careful.

I live in California, but not near Bakersfield. Curious though about what town this was, and how your wife knew that it was prone to people stepping out of buildings with guns? Was this a visit to the old homestead, or were there signs posted "Photographers not welcome ... you shoot here, we shoot back!"

I think it had more to do with the District of Columbia license plates and the Obama bumper sticker on their car, than anything else.

Photo-Al I really like the way you merged your/a face into that dog. Very creative.
If you are wondering how she knew, I would like to invite you to Gary Indiana and see if the Holy Spirit doesn't talk to you about getting out of your car.

I think we here in Oklahoma are just more laid back. Yeah we have crime, and I "pack", legally, just in case. But for the most part, all Oklahomans are good people. Not saying that other people are not (good) by any means, but life is good here. I live in a small town near the outskirts of Oklahoma City and we don't lock our house, and I wouldn't think twice about leaving my keys in my car. It's a good place to be!

Does your wife have intimate knowledge of somebody being capped in that town or is she just paranoid? You could also both get popped getting out of your car in your own driveway but I usually get out and go in the house daily anyway...

It used to be that way here. I am just southeast of Tulsa. But the other night a friend of ours across the highway from us was being broken in on while he and his family were home. That doesn't happen all the time, but we lock the car and the doors just in case.

The only time I was ever threatened for taking pictures was when I was taking a picture of the house I was born in. Now the area is a pretty rough section of Denver. The lady came out of the house yelling and looking like a meth cook. This caused my mom to step on the gas real quick. It was fun.
