how does 'constant movement scanning' differ from individual images?

thank you for the sites but i was unable to find any information about how the scan was performed.

Reading between the lines and comparing it to scanning methods 20 years ago i got the impression they perform a vertical line scan, adding distance per sample point and then rotate a fraction of a degree and repeat. The cloud is then assembled into a crude surface mesh.

Am I in the ball park?

You are and I am sure there are other videos that explain it better. This is how much of the world is digitized now and can reveal very detailed models. Painting the skin is where most fail.

I used to use Sick Lidar scanners as navigational aids on free roaming robots so have quite a bit of experience with time of flight scanners and believe me the focus stackers have nothing to fear.
A $500 camera and free software will outperform any $10,000 scanner out there by an order of magnitude with ease.
