You never mentioned if your are wanting to get this online or a local store. In this price range I would at least try one in the store with your camera - test the adjustments on the legs, mount your camera, check to see if it feels strudy. If a store will not let you try it, in store - to me that would be one be one less to consider. To those that don't mind returning items, know the return policy, save the receipt and give it a go. Mostly I'm betting in that price range they won't vary all that much and may well come down to ease of use for you.

A couple weeks ago I replaced my old one with a Manfroto 394 ... It's really awesome ... 360 degree head that is reversible so you can point the camera straight down for extreme closeups ... the legs spread in 2 positions regular and wide plus 3 lengths down. It only weighs 4 pounds and has a shoulder strap on the carrying case so it's easy to get around with it... I can't say enough good about it.
I paid 99.00 dollars for it but I bought it at the base exchange so no taxes. I don't imagine it's much more anywhere else.
I'm like you I opened the box and checked it out before purchasing it.

It's very sturdy

first thing uyou need to know is your budget, muission accomplished, next how heavy is your gear>?
Heavyier is more expensive than lightweight. Ball head or pan head? how far you going to lump it? Aluminum or carbon? for the casual shooter the top end of the light weight spectrum will suit you. Likewise the casual shooter will make due with a tilt and pan. look at the plethora of options whjen yuou google PHOTO TRIPODS
enjoy

If you have a Best Buy in your area, I know they have a nice selection of tripods for different price ranges and they are also of different weights / qualities. I checked them out at my local store just last month to see what was available locally as I have an older light weight one and want to upgrade in the future to a heavier one. Buying one at a place like that will be cheaper than going to a camera store. Hope this helps.

I can vouch for Manfrotto (used to be Bogen) having used several of their tripods. I still use what they call an "articulated arm" which is a very wild kind of camera support.
Good stuff!

As stated before, Your tripod depends on what you are photographing. Wildlife with a heavy lenses larges sturdy tripod, Gimbal head. Landscapes Tripod surdy, a good ball head. Do you want an aluminum tripod (cheaper) or a Carbon one (pricer) I have 2 tripods in my car one for wildlife and one for scenic plus a Monopod and also a small tripod for macros. Remember you get what you pay for the tripod.

I have been looking for something like this. Do you know if it can be attached to a wheel chair?
