I'm a new guy on the block... I have a computer that is running Win 8.1. Is Photoshop Elements 12 compatable? Do you recomment it or Corel PaintShop Pro X6 Ultimate?

It is compatible, yes. I had a Paintshop Pro version a few years ago; hated it. Love, love, love PSE 12!

You will find opposite opinions, of course :)

I think the layout (interface?) of PSE 12 is very clean and uncluttered. I like that you have quick, guided, and expert tabs - and that there are collapsible windows so things can be tucked away when not needed.

Of course there are many books, videos and other aids to learning - along with generous UHH members!

Didn't know if you were aware of the post-processing section on UHH. It has great tutorials and there are always members willing to help with specific issues. Here's the forum:

I have both they work great, but I prefer Corel, of course that is a personal preference.

I have Elements 12 and Windows 8.1 and they work great together. I also have and use Light Room 4.4 with Windows 8.1.

Just be aware that the PSE 12 program is a 32 bit program. While it will run on the 64-bit Windows 8, there are certain things it cannot do - such as run OnOnesoftware's Pefect Suite 8. That may be of no consequence to you now, but it may come up later.

LR5 and PSE12 on Win 8.1 is my setup as well, works fine. Seems most folks spend about 90-95% of their time in Lightroom and only need PSE for more exotic fixes...

As I recall, it is a 64 bit program on an Apple.

After upgrading my PSE and PrE package every year for three years, I passed on 12. The primary reason was try to tell Adobe that they overlooked something important. I don't think they heard me!

Yes, PSE 12 is compatible with Windows 8.1. You can check its technical specifications.

I am afraid there are two bits of misinformation here.

FIRST:

PSE 12 is a 32-bit application ONLY when installed in Windows; PSE12 on a Mac is a 64-bit application.

The only thing PSE 12 cannot do when installed in Windows 64-bit is to take advantage of extra RAM. PSE 12 installs itself as a 32-bit application in a 64-bit Windows OS. Consequently, it is bound by the RAM limitations specific to a 32-bit application when installed in a 64-bit OS.

SECOND:

There is no problem installing Perfect Photo Suite 8 or 8.5 in PSE 12. It works just fine. I have it installed in PSE 10, 11, and 12 (running on both Windows 7 64-bit and Windows 8.1 64-bit). The tech specs for Perfect Photo Suite say:

Optional Application Integration . . . Adobe Photoshop Elements 10, 11, 12

I now have Corel PaintShop Pro X6 and Perfect Photo Suite 8 and love them both. I find it much easier to use and navigate then PS Elements and Lightroom 5.
