The Macropod by Macroscopic Solutions

The Macropod is a rigid, portable photo-macrography system, which allows the user to make razor sharp, fully focused photographs of small sized specimens at 18 to 26-megapixel resolution. It overcomes the extreme Depth of Field (DoF) limitations inherent in optics designed to image smaller specimens. Normally, lenses designed for macro will only render a very small fraction of the depth of targeted specimen in sharp focus at any one exposure. The Macropod allows the user to select and make multiple exposures in precise increments along the Z-axis (depth) such that each exposure’s area of sharp focus overlaps with the previous and next exposure. These source images are then transferred to a computer and merged by an image-stacking program. The stacking program finds and stitches together only the focused pixels from each exposure into one image. The Macropod integrates industry-leading components in a novel and elegant way to achieve these results.

It's very interesting, but on the home web site it seems like you need to purchase the camera body and 24-105L lens, which I have. Can you just purchase the rest of it without that?

ALL but the special tripod are available from other sources. This is basically an assembled package with a custom-built tripod, which is why the company is having difficulty raising investment capital. The idea is sound, but other than the custom tripod, nothing is new.

So you can purchase just the tripod?

The custom tripod is the only unique part of this package. Any camera & any macro lens can be used just as successfully.

I was looking at what I thought was a "package" that included the MPE65 Macro lens from Canon.

The Macroscopic Solutions company makes the custom "Macropod" tripod, and assembles ALL of the other commercially-available components in order to make this kit.

I remember seeing this when it first came out. If one wanted an all in one solution without the hassle of buying the individual components it might be worth considering. I wasn't real impressed with tripod portion of the rig. Basically the camera is stationary and the stack shot moves the subject on a stage.

Stack Shot is nice for low magnification stacks but certainly not required. A Velmex linear stage is just as accurate for this type of work and you don't have to carry all the axillary equipment to the field. You do have to manually move the lead screw on the slide though. A good macro tripod Giotto 9630B, Manfrotto 190XPRO, or Vanguard PRO 263 will support a Stack Shot (or Velmex) / camera combo so the subject doesn't have to be place on the stage. Back pack looks interesting but I imagine creative DIY types can use foam for a Pelican to fashion a similar system with their favorite pack.

The company raised only $4,500 out of the $30,000 target venture capital.
