I'm traveling to Africa for a photo Safari and looking for suggestions for a device that I can use to download RAW photos from my SD card to my external hard drive without going through a lap top (trying to eliminate having to carry a laptop). I will be taking my Nexus tablet.
I have 2 older Wolverine card storage devices I have used on vacations that worked perfectly. You can get the one with a view screen, I found that great for reviewing at night or downtime.

If you have an iPad or Android tablet and that mobile device and your computer back home both have "Go to My PC " installed as well as access to Dropbox you can:
Download images (RAW) to the tablet where they get their first edit.
upload the survivors of edit to Dropbox.
Connect your tablet to your PC BACK HOME USING "Go to My PC".
Open your computer's screen on the tablet.
Download your image to whatever disc storage and bac-up storage you wish.
There y' go!
And on a day of drenching rains, open up Photoshop or Lightroom one your PC back home and then, on your tablet screen, start p.p. of your images.
Have a great trip.

I am interested in this too but I have a question: How do you download images to the iPad from the camera? Just got my iPad and have no clue how to do this.

I use an Acer Netbook when traveling. It's larger than a portable drive, but about the same price, and it's basically a computer with lots of storage.
I would be too afraid to trust my images to something other than a laptop. I would get a handful of cards and a wallet. save the cards until you get home or somewhere that you can download them to your PC.

The portable card reader/storage units are in fact a type of pc with a hard drive. The software of the unit copies the card to the hard drive in folders for each card.
I usually don't reformat the cards while traveling, but use the storage unit as an on the road backup. It plugs into a pc like an external hard drive, which it is.

Same here. I bring home the cards, the netbook, and a small hard drive with the same images.

After uploading to DropBox, why not just open from DropBox to the Computer after returning home? Why open it on the computer's screen on the tablet with GTMPC? Did I miss something?

Buy the Apple Camera Connection Kit. Make sure you get the one with the correct connector for your iPad

You may still have memory capacity problems if You try to just store them on the iPad.
Also, I'm still not clear on whether or not the iPad will open RAW. I'll take a look tonight for you.
Re the Apple Camera Connection kit, if you use CF cards, you will have to buy a 3rd party CF module
Has anyone tried a 5-in-1] RAVPower® FileHub Wireless SD Card Reader with 3000mAh Backup Battery, Wireless Mobile Storage Media Sharing, WLAN Hot Spot & NAS File Server to download photos to an external hard drive without having to go through a Netbook or laptop? YOu still need a cell phone or tablet to operate the device.

I use SD cards, shoot raw and have an Ipad air. I look at them on line and my Ipad may not have enough storage, its 32 g, I may just buy a bunch of sdhc cards.
