When Sher and I discussed this challenge for June it was hard to come up with something in a short time frame. I thought of Peanuts montra by Jeff Berner, “Looking is a gift...seeing is power” and gave Sher that as my challenge topic. Over the past few weeks I got in touch with my feminine side and decided to change my mind.

In my research of Jeff Berner for this challenge I came across another quote by a different artist that provokes even greater thought and insight into being creative and an artist. Edger Degas said “Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.” Now that can be interpreted in many ways, so, let me give you my impression of what he is saying. We as photographers see what most people do not pay attention to in their daily lives. A leaf floating in a brook, the hopelessness in the faces of the homeless, the joy in a child and the examples could go on and on. It is our hope that we can capture a thought, beauty, an emotion in a ways that will cause others to stop for a moment and truly see as we have seen.

That is the challenge, to post images that allows the viewer to experience what and how you have seen. Abstract, land or skyscapes, people what ever has attracted you. Now to achieve this the work is going to have to be elevated at least one step above a snapshot. Keep in mind all that you have learned from the past challenges about lighting, composition and post production and use it. Let us see what you have experienced and feel what you felt.

Happy shooting

You DO come up with some good challenges ....and images too.

Last night I was at an EVENT called Art All Night. The event was held in what once was the Roebling Wire Factory, in the city of Trenton, NJ, Right across the street was another old building...with a big fence around it and a sign reading "environmental investigation". I saw something special in it...do you?

safe building used for art all night

First off Glad to see you Nan and thank you for your comments. Yes, there is something special in old building. They have a story to tell of there past and present, and I would love to see more of this ones story.

thanks for the nice welcome.
I guess I did a good job in piquing your interest...one problem...I don't have any more and don't know anything else about it. I do know a little about the Roebling wire factory....made the cables for the Brooklyn Bridge.

I wonder if these had anything to do with making cables

I bet they were. A lot of the old factories had belt driven machines. This looks as though several machines work off of central power. Maybe some one else will have another idea. It is good to see you here Nan. I do see what you post on Google+ from time to time.

The first is a wonderful portrait of two. I can see the love between them. The others tell an emotional story. Sometimes it take more than one picture to get the story across to the viewer.

I remember side walks like this as a kid. For the life of me I can not remember what town they were in. I am glad you showed them for I never know what they were actually for.

Degas died half blind with no friends, he despised being called an impressionist and never married.

A lot of artist of the era died in poverty. It is all in the marketing. I was talking with Bill Fortney not long ago and he was commenting about there are excellent photographers that are broke because they do not know how to market themselves. Then there are poor ones that get all the notoriety because they are not photographs they are marketers. I am afraid I will be in the same boat as you Bill.
