In the MOVING FROM NIKON .... thread Macrolor suggested the use of a camera "holster" by Cotton Carrier camera vest with a D7001 and a 50/500. I looked at the site - http://buy.cottoncarrier.com - and questioned if the weight of the lens and impact loads from walking and moving around would be detrimental to the lens mount on the camera?

Guess the same question would apply to the cross body strap designs?

Any thoughts on the design?

I would not trust it .......Here is what I use - a web belt with suspenders attached to an oversize Tamrac soft lens case with a leg tie - just like the old west.....

Do you use the cross body design or the Cotton Vest? I was surprised the Cotton Vest Design didn't address that, maybe I missed it.

Yes, $10 for the belt, $10 for the suspenders, $25 for the case, $2.00 for the shoestring leg tie...... so, about $50.

I have used a cotton carrier vest for several years now. The holster whould manage the camera with 5-500, no problem. I normally carry my 400mm 2.8 on a monopod, slung over my shoulder and have my 70-200mm 2.8 on the holster. For all-day shooting, the vest saves a lot of neck discomfort. When I have my 70-200 and 24-70, the 24-70 rides comfortably in the chest socket. The system comes with tethers which prevents accidental disconnection with the socket, which normally arises when I kneel down, turning the camera enough to disengage (rarely). Hope this helps.

Hi Moles

Looks like a good rig. Do you attach to the lens foot on the heavier lens?

Personally I prefer Black Rapid Sling Products...I find them to be, extreemly comfortable, when I"m out and about with my Nikon D800 and a long and heavy lens..

Not too shabby but it may be a little awkward with really big lenses.

I carry my 300 f/2.8 + 1.4 TC mounted on camera in a soft bag (that came with a sawzall) until ready to use.

Weighs about 10 pounds and because of that I leave it home mostly in favor my EM 1 and 75-300 .

I have found a good solution for getting large lens/camera combinations out into the field. I call it my Camera Kaddy. Works really well for heavy equipment and can be rigged to carry almost any combination of stuff. It also folds up for transport. I'm sure I'm not the first one to use this system.

why is the lens so close to the ground? would it not be better monted higher on the caddy?

That was my thought. That is way to much money to be that close to the ground unprotected.

If the lens has a tripod foot, I would use that instead of the camera tripod mount, so the lens mount only has to be strong enough to handle the camera. Since the camera does not extend far from the mount, the stress would not be too great. The biggest problem is with the lenses which have an "optional" tripod foot, which means it is big enough to benefit from the foot but the manufacturer decided to be cheap about it.
