An 8-year-old boy died after accidentally shooting himself in the head while firing an Uzi submachine gun under adult supervision at a gun fair.
The boy lost control of the weapon while firing it Sunday at the Machine Gun Shoot and Firearms Expo at the Westfield Sportsman’s Club, police Lt. Lawrence Vallierpratte said.
Police said the boy, Christopher Bizilj of Ashford, Conn., was with a certified instructor and called the death a “self-inflicted accidental shooting.”
As the boy fired the Uzi, "the front end of the weapon went up with the backfire and he ended up receiving a round in his head," police Lt. Hipolito Nunez said. The boy died at a hospital.
The boy's father and older brother were also there at the time, a gun club member and school official said. Francis Mitchell, a longtime member and trustee of the club, said he was told the boy's father was supporting his son from behind when the shooting happened.
Although the death appeared to be an accident, officials were investigating.
It is legal in Massachusetts for children to fire a weapon if they have permission from a parent or legal guardian and are supervised by a properly certified and licensed instructor, Lt. Hipolito Nunez said. The name of the instructor helping the boy was not released.
The event ran in conjunction with C.O.P Firearms and Training, said in an ad that people are allowed to fire weapons at vehicles, pumpkins and other targets at the event.
"It's all legal & fun — No permits or licenses required!!!!" reads the ad, posted on the club's Web site.
Messages left on answering machines for the club and the C.O.P. group were not returned Monday.

Hmmmm..... a kid under adult (a certified instructor, no less) supervision has an accident with a firearm that ends his life.

When in the name of simple common sense are we going to learn that every single time a gun is handled the chance of injury and death escalates.

An 8 yr. old has no business shooting a weapon like that, heck an adult has control issues with one of those. recoil make those guns travel like crazy.

Why was there an Uzi at a gun fair? And, why are Uzis available to the general public anyway?

It may just be me, but I've never encountered a time when I've need to defend myself from a gang of deer carrying automatic weapons.

Are you suggesting that the only use for guns is killing deer?

I don't think most people realize that many gun owners don't act responsibly with their weapons. Many people have guns in my area but they aren't fascinated by them by wearing them all over. If people only knew the number of accidental shootings there are, they'd think twice about having one unlocked. I think if the numbers were compared, they'd find that the people who carry will more than likely have that gun used on themselves or a loved one more readily than against a robber.

Hell, most people don't act responsibly with their cars, let alone their smart phones, especially in combination of both at the same time!

God forbid we use them to kill people...

If I may assume where you are heading. Do you really think it necessary to have an automatic assault weapon in your home to protect yourself? If so, maybe you should consider one of these http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d84r8gMGxFQ

Where does it stop? When is too much, too much?

And this changes what? Who says you must own a gun of any type. Just don't get your hands on one of these guns and you won't kill yourself or hurt others.

Take away your rights to own a gun and you have lost your other freedoms.

I am a gun owner, I have a permit to carry and I agree that this was an accident that should have never happened. An 8 year old has no business trying to shoot an Uzi. The father who allowed his son to shoot the weapon will pay a dear price for his actions. It brings to mind parents who allow young children on ATVs or people who keep wild animals as pets. Its freedom and when you have freedom people will make choices that others find ridiculous. That said I don't believe everyone should lose their freedoms because of the actions of a few. These stories are not as common as the media or the liberals would have you believe.

I do not see this a liberal versus conservative thing, but more a personal responsibility issue. You have to wonder if the father would have let his son drive the family car, but he allowed him to shoot an assault weapon. The military trains for this purpose. It's not a one hour class.

THINK. That is all I ask. When your gut says; would my wife be okay with this, maybe you should listen.

Do you think it is necessary to tell others what they can hunt with? I own an automatic assault baseball bat. Do you have a problem with that? My Glock 19 can be used as an assault weapon if I use it in such a manner. Do you really want the government to control your life? Are you that helpless?

Pepper, I have to disagree, you know I respect you and your opinions but I do know how often gun accidents happen and it's bad. It's so taken for granted now that it hardly makes more than the local news if it happened in your area. One man was with his newborn child, his first child had just came home from the hospital. A neighbor accidentally shot and killed him. A man not far from me was at his birthday party and showed his new pistol to a friend who he accidentally shot, the last thing I knew was that he was on life support. Safety has to be taught, it has to be a mandatory course before owning a gun. Why were these guns even loaded, why weren't they in their safes? It's really sad.

I am not going to debate you as I do not assume I will change your mind, but I will answer your question by saying Yes.

Without the government I believe we would revert to a Wild West society where the one with the biggest, or fastest gun wins. Do you really want that?

I get it, you want to defend yourself. I am okay with that, but I ask that you do it responsibly, registering your gun and by taking a class to learn how to use the weapon properly.

Do I think you need an assault weapon? No, but again I am not going to change your mind so I will not beat my head against a wall trying to do so.

Believe what you believe, but do so responsibly.
