Hi , thinking about purchasing a sigma 120-300 f/2.8 ! chap wants about £800.00 it is the non os model. Has anyone any experience with this lens ? My idea is to pair it up with a 1.4 x 2.0 x teleconvertors ,with the x2 should give me 600mm 0n my 7d . I know about the weight issue ! Wondering is it a fair price? Thanxs in advance.

Not a bad price if its in good condition, but you won't be hand holding it very long. That lens is best used on a monopod or tripod. The OS model was a big improvement.

The older version had only so, so IQ, especially with extenders, were it was very soft across the entire frame.
The newer version has improved a lot, but AF is still sluggish.

Thanks for the rapid reply MT . Was toying with the idea of getting the new 600mm tamron but heard about so many problems concerning the 7d thought about giving it a miss for now!

I just looked at one this past weekend at the local camera shop here in SF. This puppy is a monster. It is very heavy at 7.5 lbs.!

Supposedly Tamron has a firmware upgrade fix for that lens, but it is still nearly impossible to actually buy one.
I use the Sigma 120-300mm F2.8 OS, but on Nikons, and the AF is extremely fast and accurate. The lens is also as sharp as any other zoom on the market. Quite a feat for the worlds ONLY 300mm F2.8 zoom lens!

Thanxs for the reply. Interesting I was thinking about the convertors for Bird photography in India which would of extended my reach! Was thinking about the Tamron 200-600mm but blooming heard so many problems across other forums about freezing ,af issues thought the 120-300 may be the best route to go down.

I have had my Tamron (150-600) for about a month or so now. No issues on my 5DIII or 7D.

Check the serial number with Sigma to make sure they still have parts for it and will fix it if it breaks. You don't want to end up with a £800.00 paperweight.
