Giraffes, Giraffes, and More Giraffes

Went out to our local zoo yesterday to practice with my new Canon SX50 HS. We have a brand new adorable baby giraffe.
Some of the shots I was not happy with and I will post those separately for c&c later.

Enjoy your free trip to the zoo - minus the 90 degree heat we had here yesterday.

You got some great shots, Mike! Super-sweet subject.

If you have time, when shooting lighter subject against dark background (#3, but even #1), set the exposure compensation to -0.7 and see how you like it. Actually, with #3, you might have even gone to -1.0

Linda, thanks so much for the advice. Next time out (when this heat wave breaks) I will shoot with different EV numbers to see how they come out. We have swans and egrets galore, so it should be no problem finding a light colored subject. Hopefully, they will be near some dark bushes or reeds or something!
In your opinion, and knowing that I am just learning the camera, should I be shooting in some sort of bracketed mode? I rarely shoot in auto or any of the program modes, so I do not even know if this camera will allow me to do that.

Without digging out my user guide, I'm thinking there is a bracket mode, yes. What I do, when time permits, is just change the exposure compensation. You can also shoot in raw if you're not going to use digital zoom, or burst mode, but that may not be your thing.

Thanks Linda. I am pretty certain I read something about a bracket mode in the almost 300 page manual. I know I can find it. I also prefer to change the EV whenever my shooting conditions permit. Hopefully the bracket mode will work in cases when I know there will not be enough time to "fiddle".
