Found this Snapper in the backyard yesterday morning. Pretty good size for these parts - top of shell was close to 2 feet long. I am curious about the damage to the shell right behind the head; one long gash and a couple of holes - critters, guns, parasites???? Anyone have an guess?

Don't know what did the damage; but I would steer clear of this fellow. They kind of spook me.

With a smile like that, why be afraid?

I'd guess a gator bite a few years old. Knowing the location would make it easier to guess. Almost forgot, cool photo. Thanks.

These things have no teeth, what's the worry?
You don't NEED 5 fingers!

Looks like a predator bite radius, gator, croc. More than likely when young.

Wonderful image, love the point of view

That must be the "Common Snapping Turtle". It looks very mild compared to the "Alligator Snapper" that I'm used to seeing.

Pretty sure it is a common snapping turtle, bit bigger than the norm.
We're in Minnesota. If they are Gator bites I'm really concerned!

I was beginning to think the damage was caused by a coyote or dog but the spacing of the holes does not appear to be canine and we don't have any big cats.

They're living in the sewers.

You think we could sell a movie script to Spielburg with that premise?
