Hi all,
I stumbled on the following site a couple of weeks ago and just read it last night in anticipation of receiving my SX50 today sometime.
It's by Tony Britton and he talks mainly about settings to use for birds. I thought it was very helpful. Hope at least one or two of you agree.

I tweaked a couple of my settings based on the article. Thanks!

I often use exposure compensation, but I didn't know this interesting info (from the article):

"As you may know, many small sensor point-and-shoot cameras tend to "overexpose" the image resulting in "blown-out highlights" producing images that often lack nice color quality and sharpness so I intentionally "underexpose" the image a bit and get exactly what I desire. The results simply look more dramatic and naturally sharper, in my opinion."

Hope you have fun with your SX50, Mike. I've taken many thousands of shots, and it just doesn't get old - lol.

You are very welcome Linda and Bmac. My SX50 was on the porch this afternoon. Battery is now charged. I am going to work on the settings and tomorrow, weather permitting, I will get some shots of our local egrets and swans.

Thanks so much for that valuable info. When I get my printer problem worked out I am going to print it out to take with me when shooting.

I'm still waiting for Canon to bring out the SX60 that was rumoured to come out last month. A great time to get a good deal on the SX50 though and thanks for that link as I hope it will probably apply to the new release, maybe?

I am glad that I found it and that it helped so many so far. Now if I could just figure out how to raise the flash when it tells me to.
I am still slogging through the manual. It rained here all day, so no trip out to take photos outdoors. It really seems like a great little camera that will do what I need it to.

Thanks for the link Mad Mike. That Canon SX50HS is quite a complicated little camera.

You have to raise the flash manually when you want or need it. It does not pop up automatically or when you push the little button. I had to read the manual to find that tidbit!
