EngineerAl, of course Engineers must believe to function, believe in shear strength tables, I-Beam calculations, and such. They tend to hedge by over building and over believing. In essence they believe they believe and reinforce each other; perhaps even overbuilding that trust and reinforcement in each other. Worse yet, they have the audacity to think it maters that they believe that their calculation tables depend on the "hand of god."

Theoretical physicists and other disciplines such as chemistry and way out biological researchers are humble to the point that they do not contemplate "god." Instead they are thinking that their consideration of god, yes/no/how, has no place in their research. God-think only muddles their minds and is non-productive.

If you do not believe in god, then your an Atheist... a terror term indeed... throw stones and kill that Atheist!! Well, no, the non-consideration of God or god simply says, don't know - don't care... Atheist believe in an anti-religion... many of us just do not give a flip and care more about real-meaningful theoretical contemplations.

Lennox is an olde dude with not much sand in his hour glass and so now want to hedge his bets... and of course sell books to believers for income. If there is an after life he can give St. Peter an autographed copy... if no after life, well he will never know...will he.

EngineerAl, you give no clues to who or what you are (RR Engineer, or Civil, Chemical, etc. Engineer). The exception are clues by your previous 4 remarks within UHH.

1. You are right wing neuvo-Republican

2. Have considered it gods will that you rather than dogs have the curvature that better humps Dolphins... a bit to erotic for me. Altho, there was one April first a short play about a man who fell in love with a Dolphin...

3. One comment suggests you think contemplative thinking and color of skin, not poverty and lack of education, contribute to low morals and crime. To quote you, "Democrats have contributed more to crime by blacks than anything else in America."

Get your head on straight EngineerAl.

I spent an hour and a few minutes that I will never, ever get back by listening to this infantile man present conclusions as facts, make incredible leaps of logic by using assumptions not rooted in reality, and essentially saying, "I believe in god, Hawking does not, but he's wrong because god is real. Real because I say god is."

That the large audience did not get up and leave during this puerile rant says a great deal about Scottish universities.

I think the critically-thinking student body mostly stayed away from this presentation, having far better things to do. Judging from the video, it appears most guests belong to the 50+ age group, possibly having little or nothing to do with the university. It has become quite common these days for universities to rent out their lecture halls to all sorts of non-university interest groups.

Pullum, you could not hit the broad side of a barn with a shotgun if you were inside the barn when you pulled the trigger.
Engineers overbelieve. Pathetic, that.

There you go again. "You conservatives just want to kill everyone and let God sort it out." Your words. In fact, it is you liberals who promote and celebrate killing. You call it "choice" when the baby's father has no "choice." The grandparents have no "choice." Worst of all, the baby has no "choice."

"Before you were formed in the womb, I knew you."

Yes, I can see your "intellectualism" coming to the fore. Just learn how to spell "you're," won't you?

And your high priest, Richard Dawkins, would never "sell books to atheists for income". Even one of his own fellow atheists at Oxford said of Dawkins' latest big seller, "It makes me ashamed to be an atheist." He said that because Dawkins wrote so very hatefully and ignorantly.

Pullum, have you absolutely no idea as to the demographics of felons in prison? None at all? Senator and Professor, the late Daniel Patrick Moynihan, wrote thirty or forty years ago that the incredible rate of single black women bearing children is the major cause of crime and disfunctionality for blacks. It has almost trebled since he wrote his findings, which were then labeled "racist" by race-baiters such as you.

You and your fellow race-baiting leftists have been immersed in your own lies for decades, and there is no escape from it. Hence we have the miserable president now in the White House who is corrupt, narcissistic, pathologically dishonest, and least damaging of his many faults, incompetent.

We have given you a Republic, madam, if you can keep it. - Benjamin Franklin

I am a right-wing radical, like James Madison, Thomas Jefferson, and George Washington.

You're more on the Fidel Castro side. Socialism and lies don't work. They have been repeatedly tried all around the earth, and continue today in the cesspools of Africa and in North Korea.
Socialism is fascist.

Thomas Jefferson: "The hocus-pocus phantasm of a God like another Cerberus, with one body and three heads, had its birth and growth in the blood of thousands and thousands of martyrs." -- Letter to James Smith, December 8, 1822

"Gouverneur Morris had often told me that General Washington believed no more of that system (Christianity) than did he himself." -Thomas Jefferson, in his private journal, Feb. 1800

Gnslngr, you can quote snippets from anyone you wish.

It is an undeniable fact that our Founding Fathers were Christians.
There is a book bearing hundreds of pages of evidence attesting to that fact. This link provides you with many facts and quotes about Jefferson:

http://www.monticello.org/site/research-and-collections/jeffersons-religious-beliefs

We say the pledge of allegiance to this day, as "one nation, under God".

You are welcome to say it as you wish, or to stand there mutely and say nothing. True Americans proudly sing "God bless America." You leftists, not so much.

That is precisely why America is in the miserable shape we now see around us. Bankrupt, over-regulated, ignorant, and growing worse.

A professor researched generosity in many different quantifiable ways. He expected his research to prove that liberals and atheists are more generous, as they/you always claim to be.
When he found that his data contradicted his theory, he admitted to checking his statistics "again and again." It was undeniable. People of faith give more than you atheists.
Not just more to churches, not just to family and friends, but also they give more of their time, more of their blood, more everything. The book is Who Really Cares. You need to read it, and learn.

Atheists and liberals are exceedingly stingy, except with other people's money. Take Hanoi John Kerry, please.

He and his filthy rich wife, who inherited the Heinz fortune when he died, have the majority of their hundreds of millions in tax free municipal bonds.
Kerry docks his yacht in a different state, to dodge Massachusetts' outrageous docking fees and taxes.

Hypocrisy is what Democrats do best, after lying, race-baiting, fomenting class warfare, and promoting the butchery of unborn, innocent babies.

Be proud, sir. Be very proud.

Your and many others observation of Liberal vs Conservative is very accurate and perhaps understated. Liberals probably make up a majority of the 47%.

"Under god" was added to the pledge of allegiance in 1954. Like most of your infantile rant, the misconception of reality is glaring. You are the problem with this country. You are the infantile sap that's so easily manipulated by those who would plunder and destroy this country.

Thank goodness you and your kind are dying out. It may not be too late for intelligent people to fix the mess you've made.

You didn't even read your own link! A deist is NOT a Christian nor would any Christian rewrite the bible to remove Christ’s divinity and render him a mere prophet. The majority of the founders were deists or, like Paine, an athiest. You really should read before you write...

We say the pledge of allegiance to this day, as "one nation, under God".

The pledge was written in 1892 by Socialist Francis Bellamy and contained no reference to God. The 'under God' phrase was added during the communist fear campaign of the early 50's and had nothing to do with the founders nor, for that matter, any actual belief in God.

Atheists/agnostics/unafiliated (PewResearch on Religion and Public Life) make up 17% of the population and contribute 25% of all charitable donations; further, this goes directly to the charity and isn't filtered through the greedy hands of a church where it may or may not go to the needy...

The believers always point to the concept that the universe could not have started out of nothing. Something had to start it. They do not allow for the posibility That there was Never nothing. If they believe then that god startyed the universe who started god. And by the way just because we do not know what caused the big bang doesn't mean that god did it, Ignorance does imply divinity.

Let's talk about ignorance, shall we? I'll begin with your own words.

1. You misspelled "possibility." How "intellectual" of you.
Atheists are always preening over their own "intellectualism."
This may be because atheists consider themselves the gods of the universe.

2. You capitalized "Never" incorrectly.

3. You misspelled "started." Difficult word, that one.

4. You capitalized "Ignorance" in ignorance.

In the video, which you obviously did not watch, Professor Lennox said "If someone created God, then He wouldn't be God, would He?"

Fantasy pretensions of atheists is consummately ignorant.

Arguing with leftists/atheists is like playing chess with a pigeon. It just knocks over pieces and struts around.

Pardon me I guess I am not perfect. I make mistakes. You , I presume, never make mistakes. You are however, I think the best word would be,pompous. By the way I am not a leftist. I simply choose not to believe in things for which there is no proof. I am sure you will be looking for all of the grammar or spelling errors in this reply. One more thing. I never made reference regarding my intelligence or lack thereof. I merely stated the postulate that ignorance does not imply divinity. At it's most basic, religeon is an attempt to explain the unexplainable. Many of those unexplainable things in the past, now have well accepted explanations. I can mention many things that 1 religion or another preached as truth which turned out to be completely incorrect
