I love bears. This one is really handsome. Wouldn't mind having one hang out in our backyard. All we have are skunks, raccoons, coyotes, opossums, foxes, and rabbits. And birds - lots and lots of all kinds of birds.

You sound like me. When we were in Alaska, I saw a big grizzly coming out of the woods and heading toward the river on the other side of the road. I came to a screeching halt, grabbed my p&s off the front seat, stuck my entire upper torso out of the window and proceeded to shoot away. Looking back, it probably wasn't the smartest thing to do.

well this one was headed away from me and I stayed right by the car door so if he decided to head my way I could jump in the car

good capture. This photo of a beer on my deck is not to good because of the flash back of my flash on the sliding glass door but I like it because it was so close to me. About 6 inches away....Rich
Rich,
I lived in Stroudsburg for 34 years, a ten minute walk from downtown. We had bears all the time. One time, a bear came around two in the morning to raid the bird feeders. He bent the feeders, tore the Cardinal feeder off the fence and it landed in the yard. I was out on the deck with two pot lids banging away in order to get him to leave before he climbed the fence and got into the yard. My silly dog thought he could take him on! looking back on it, it's the most amusing encounter we had with them.
But that is what happens when their habitat is taken over by humans. They are just trying to survive.

I agree with you about their habitat. Humans turn beauty into concrete. My house right next to state game lands. I was out a couple of days ago to set up a beer trap with the game commission so they catch one and check it's health, age and tag it and then release her/him and off she goes. I just hope nobody shoots this beautiful animal....Rich

why not? It's just that you might be the main entree.
Just remember everybody: there is a huge difference between the generally pacifist black bears like the one shown here and the grizzly bears who eat tourists in our national parks every year.
