Tethering using Lightroom

...recently had opportunity to tether through LR on my laptop. I've done this before, but it's rare, so far, that I do an inside studio-type shoot. First; has anyone been able to use Live View whilst tethering? So as to make lighting adjustments before clicking the shutter? I was in a bind for time so didn't get to experiment. Second; I was kinda shocked that the files were not written to my camera's card!? Using a D800. Any thoughts?

-Never tried live view
-D7000 and it doesn't save to the card either. I have sync software running that regularly backs up shots to a 2nd external hard drive.
