Hello MarkintheHV

It is a Great Blue Heron. Excellent shot. It has a piece of wire or fishing line tangled around it's left leg which has potential to get snagged and cause it injury.

I took his picture about every 5 steps. Trying to get as close as i could. This was the last one I got before he flew.

It's is a Great Blue Heron we have a lot around our rivers here. They are very difficult to get near even when out on the river in the shallows catching fish. I usually have to shoot them with a 300 mm lens and sometime stay concealed behind brush.

Nice shot.

Yes, they really don't liked being approached. They will usually let out a loud squawk to let you know they are annoyed and then take off and make another couple of squawks over their shoulder just to emphasise the point.

Nice shot. Sometimes, if you have cover around, and approach very slowly, you can get a close up like this. If they are in the open, forget about it.

A young immature great blue heron.

Nice sharp photo. I like how you got down to the bird's level. Interesting perspective.

I had lots of bushes and trees around, by a creek that the critter must have been absorbed hunting in. I walked very slowly and kept near cover. It also helped that I had a long lens (effectively 640mm) that day.

There are at least three at the reservoir near me. I go down there now and then and just wait for one to show up. One of them is rather skiddish, while another one is pretty used to people. I got these from maybe 40' away...if that. The closeup one was probably less than 40'. It was pretty content with my being there, and I could move back and forth to stay ahead of it as it walked around. It didn't seem to mind me. The other (posed) one was probably around 40'.

Very nice shots. Really like the one by the tree. You could do a little magic on the water, to make it a blue or green color.
