Muzzle fire

When I worked for the local paper a few years ago, I was assigned to shoot a Memorial day affair at a local cemetery. On the first shot of the 21 gun salute I noticed that there was fire coming from the muzzles of the guns.
I was shooting with a Nikon FM2 w/motor drive. I quickly focused on the first shooter and when I heard the command to fire I started shooting. I took about six shots as the shooters went through their routine.

Two things amazed me. One, that I even got a shot of the fire coming out of a gun, and two, that even though they all sounded like they went off at the same time, the pic shows that didn't happen.

Pic shot on Kodak ISO 400 film.

And, of course, I was very happy. The pic ran three column, front page above the fold.

You just thought you heard them all go off at the same time. The sound lasts for a short time, long enough for the others to go off while the first sound is still present. And, yes, with good timing, you will get the muzzle flash.
