I notice on some, although not on all, photos the option to download them. Often encouraged. What is the purpose of doing that? Do the photographers want them processed? If so, what do I do with them after processing?

It depends, sometimes they want it processed other times, you can enlarge or see the photo full screen by downloading it rather that looking at it on here.

It really depends on the reasons for you uploading in the first place.

If you post because you want to share the photo, this should be posted in the Gallery and really would not need the Store Original checked.

If you wanted some help with the processing or wanted to share some processing tips, you would normally post in the Post Processing section and you should check the Store Original button.

To cut a long story short, for display purpose you do not need to check store original, for analysis, critique or PP work, you should check store original.

You can download other peoples images for minute examination or where appropriate, you make changes, and then repost. You should not retain these images on your computer.

If you upload a picture that is wider than 600pixels and/or taller than 800pixels, the UHH creates a 'thumbnail' of it for display. This process takes away some of the color and detail integrity of the original.

The BEST way to upload pictures for viewers to appreciate the full beauty is to EITHER resize to no more than 600 pixels wide and no more than 800 pixels tall, OR click the "Store Original" box so the larger file can be downloaded for viewing and/or analyzing the full beauty.

If you upload a picture that is wider than 600pixe... (show quote)

Thanks.. that's the best answer I've seen and why I blindly hit store-original regardless of image...
