Is there a special way or solution to use to clean a lens

Breath fog, and good microfiber lens cloth (not shirt tail). #2 Lenspen. #3 lens tissues, and lens cleaning fluid; take your pick.
Do not use windex, or any other type of glass cleaner. Your lenses have a special achromatic coating, these types of cleaners will damage or completely remove it. I really don't like or recommend eye glass cleaning pads/tissue either, most all of them contain alcohol. This is not good for sensitive lens coatings.
Good lens cleaning kits and lenspens, are obtainable from photographic suppliers like B&H Photo.

I use a microfiber cloth or a lens pen.

Oh horse feathers....just rinse the darned thing out in a bucket of water and hang it out the window of a moving car to air dry.
It might not work so well when you're done.....but it'll be clean.
Please, before you breath on it and start wiping, please do something to remove the dust particles. Use a hand blower or at least blow real hard to remove the loose particles. If you don't you will wish you had!!

Sorry, I forgot about blowing the lens off. But I have never got a lens that dirty, I can't figure out how to do it. Short of just picking a handfull of dirt, and dumping it on the lens.
I live in NM and we have dust all the time and it is critical to remove the dust from your lenses before cleaning, same if you are around the ocean and beaches. Just a thought. I always use a UV filter to protect my lens, just have too with all the dust. I have a hand blower with fine hair brush and it really helps.
Along that same line. Is it OK to use Lens paper for eyeglasses?
Personally, I'd go with the soft cloths that you usually get with you lens or you can get them at any eye glass store.

I hadn't thought about folks, who live in the desert. I went to the Outer Banks of NC a few years back, no problems. But we have polite sand here in the Carolinas, that is unless a hurricane comes along. :)
Went to HI last year and had a real problem with salt build up on the lens, constantly cleaning them.

Do NOT breathe on your lenses.
Below is straight from Nikon's website.

The best way to clean a lens is to use a piece of lint free lens cleaning tissue and a small amount of Lens Cleaning solution. Do not use anything containing abrasives or solvents, only use Lens Cleaning Solution.
First we recommend taking a small blower brush to blow off or brush away loose dust or debris.
Next, place a drop or two of cleaner on the tissue (never directly onto the lens) and then wipe the lens in a circular motion, beginning in the center and working your way outward, removing any marks or smear.
If the above supplies are not available a clean, dry, soft, lint free cloth can be used to clean the lens. Do not breathe on the lens to fog it for cleaning. There are harmful acids in breath that can damage lens coatings. Just use the blower bulb, then brush, and wipe the lens in a circular spiral from the center outward.
The same method can be used to clean the viewfinder eyepiece of Nikon cameras.
