I have kind of an historical interest in the air wars of WWII. I've had co-workers who were bomber and fighter pilots during WWII. One guy flew P-51 Mustangs in Africa and the far East. He had many close calls and saw his best friend in the world, his wingman, fireball on a strafing run and crash into sand dunes. After the war he was glad to be done, turned down chances to become an airline pilot, and didn't even like to fly commercially. And although he told me stories, I suspect he didn't even mention the most horrifying anecdotes.

Here we have a German Jew who gambled away the family money, became a thief and stole someone's identity in order to join the RAF which enabled him to bomb the German town where his mother and other relatives were living.
