nikon NEF files and elements

Have used the search function and found that the answers to my question talk around it but dont address it directly. Issue is: as i understand it PS elements converts nef files to jpeg before editing takes place. Is this correct? If so, why bother to shot in RAW? I use to use nikon capture nx for pp NEF files but computer crashed and cant access program. Hate to spend $160 for capture nx2 when PS elements can be bought for half the price.

You got some bad information somewhere. Elements will open NEF files in Adobe Camera Raw so you can begin your processing with the raw file. When you leave Camera Raw, you will have the image in Elements and you can elect to save that file as a PSD, TIFF or JPG.

When you open a raw file in PSE, the Camera Raw Editor opens and you can apply edits to the image. then you have a choice, Close and lose edits, open the image in the PSE editor (as opposed to the Camera Raw editor) or save as dng file.

If you open the image in PSE you can then perform further edits and save as whatever you like, the raw file will still be where you left it, unscathed, but now with an xmp file to remember your edits done in ACR.

Are you saying that Photoshop Elements creates an xmp file? I know lightroom does but had no idea that Elements did.

That is certainly not correct, PS Elements will only convert raw images into jpegs, if you instruct it to do so, and only then!
