This won't do you much good, but I can't resist telling of my alltime favorite. Rollieflex 3.5. Really inconspicuous and so simple to use, and no one suspected as you looked down at the viewing screen on top that you were preparing to shoot them. And superlative quality negatives -- couldn't tell the blowups from my blow-ups from my 4x5 Linhof Technika. Too bad film is basically gone.

To properly narrow down the lens options, you must first ask yourself what kind of zoom range you most likely would want as well as how heavy the lens can be and still remain practical for your "walk-arounds". A long, heavy lens can get tiresome after a while if you climb a lot of steep hills.

I used a 16-85 on my D200 and it worked just fine. Sometimes I wished that I had more reach but wasn't willing to accept the compromises that come with too wide a range. I now use the equivalent 24-120 on my D700 and D800.

I us the 16-85mm super sharp, light wait and not to large. On my D300s.

Interesting. I still have my Nikon D200, which I bought shortly after it came out (2006, maybe?), and I bought a Nikon 18-200 mm in December 2006. That 18-200 mm might as well be welded on the camera body, because I almost never take it off. This is my walking around rig.

I also use the Nikon 16-85mm. It's very sharp, well built, and has about half the distortion of Nikon's superzoom lenses like the 18-140, 18-200, and 18-300. I stay away from superzoom lenses because all that I have used or read test reviews about have a lot of barrel distortion at wide angle settings and a lot of pincushion distortion at long focal lengths. The engineers have to compromise too much in the optical design in order to achieve the long zoom range.

Have you tried heating it with a propane torch? I heard that might loosen it. :D
