Noisy focus ring on a old manual nikkor lens

Hi there,
I purchased a "bargain" 50mm f1.4 nikkor s.c. Manual lens. All is good except the focus ring has a slight grinding sound and is a bit loose. Any ideas on how I could repair it?

Thanks

Michael

50/1.4s don't make grinding noises.

Enter from the flange end of the lens and you should be able to correct the problem with a minimum of effort.
assembly is intuitive if you have any mechanical skills.

its an old lens, use the proper screwdriver or risk heartache.

Sounds like a beach...hopefully not sand from the beach. As Oldtrigger said, use the correct screwdriver...those tiny screw are practically irreplaceable should you loose one.

The screwdrivers you would need are called JIS (Japanese Industrial Screwdivers).... They look like Phillips but are a bit different. If you try & use a Phillips, you will likely cam out the head of the screw...You may also need to use a soldering pen to heat the head of the screw as many times the sort of "locktite" they used needs to be heated to soften up a bit. I don't think it's sand but more likely just dried out helicoid lubricant.

How we always do get what we pay for.
How often we go beyond our expertise, our realm of knowledge and experience, and fall over that precipice into the abyss, weeping as we do, and wondering why.
Are you a photographer or a fledgling lens repairperson?
We have all spent years developing experience and expertise, and this area is neither mine nor yours. If you're willing to experiment, by all means feel free, we've all done it and learned from it. You've bought the lens, it makes noise, probably not focusing right, so, I gotta ask ya: "Feel lucky today? Well, do ya"?

Took apart the lens and cleaned it. Now focus very well. Only 30 minutes. (Only the apeture doesn't work.........yet). Got ya.

regardless of what others have posted here (sorry, folks), never, ever try and do this kind of repair on your own. your best bet now, is to take it to a photo technician. your initial issue was probably due to dried lubricant. this often happens to older lenses. over the years, we've seen a lot of this, from your initial problem to completely locked up. the next time anyone runs into this issue, try a hair dryer, gently. and if that doesn't work, off to your local technician.

you may not have engaged the actuator pin correctly
