I would love to have your recommendations for a good general use lens for my Df. I will use it as a walk-around for candid shots when I walk around NYC. Nothing to heavy please.

Would you like a zoom, or prime lens?
I find that my Nikon 24-120mm F4 VR Nano almost never is taken off my Df, great combo.
I would like the option of zooming in on specific subjects but not a deal breaker. A prime is also an option so any recommendation would be appreciated.
This would be a great choice after I win the lottery.

Can't go wrong with a 50mm f/1.4
It's light, has essentially the same field of view as we do. And it's good for low light.
I would have to go with a 28-70, or longer, 28-105. Not quite as fast, if that's a concern, but a very useful focal length.

When I win, I'll order up a 6mm-1250mm f/1.2
Surely somebody would sell me one, if I had the ways and means. :-D :-D :-D

One very cool thing about the DF is that you can use virtually all Nikkor lenses. That said, you may want to look at KEH for some good deals on older lenses.
Thanks to all for great recommendations.

How about a 40mm Pancake?
Very small light and unobtrusive.
Or a 50mm F/1.8D

Good advice. Would also consider the 24-85 F3.5-4.5G VR, an excellent value and lightweight.

Before you get any lens, might I suggest renting it first.
My personal favorite is the Tamron 24-70/2.8. It is rated to be a bit better than Nikon's version that is part of the holy trinity. Granted, it is almost twice the weight at 1.8 pounds and twice the price of what you are considering, but it is a sweet lens. My only negative is that it uses 82mm instead of 77mm filters. I guess what I am getting at is that you spend a bundle on that camera. Get a lens that measures up.
For the street, I use the 35 mm 1.4 G on my Df.
