Altho' I should clarify and say I am not a portrait photographer, I think you have really captured #1 very well. No untoward shadows, does not appear "flat", seems to relate to the photographer, sharp. #2 is a really good street scene.

In the first image, good catchlight in his eyes and even though he is wearing a black shirt and you have a black background there is good seperation from the two. The image is sharp and clear, I'd say an excellent portrait.
On number two, you've caught the moment well, I would like to have had a more blurred background, but again a good street scene.
